How to Do a Kick Count

The 10-in-2 Method (ACOG Recommended)

  1. Start around 28 weeks and repeat daily at the same time
  2. Pick a time when your baby is normally active (often after a meal or in the evening)
  3. Lie on your left side or sit comfortably — this increases blood flow to the placenta
  4. Note the start time and count every movement: kicks, rolls, flutters, swishes, and jabs all count
  5. Goal: Count 10 movements within 2 hours
  6. Most healthy babies reach 10 movements in under 30 minutes
📞 Call your OB or go to Labor & Delivery if: You count fewer than 10 movements in 2 hours · You notice a sudden significant decrease in movement from your baby's normal pattern · Baby feels unusually still for an extended period · You're worried — your instincts matter, always call.

What Counts as a Movement?

  • ✅ Kicks, jabs, punches
  • ✅ Rolls and tumbles
  • ✅ Flutters and swishing sensations
  • ✅ Strong hiccups (rhythmic movements)
  • ❌ Braxton Hicks contractions do not count
💡 Tips to encourage movement: Drink a cold glass of juice or water, eat a light snack, walk around briefly, or gently poke or rub your belly. Babies sleep in 20–40 minute cycles — if there's no movement, wait and try again after a rest period.
